The eyes of your dog are the vehicle in which they experience of life. It is also one of the most overlooked and neglected body parts, yet one of the more complex and detailed in their bodies.
Vitamins and minerals should be a staple in the diet of your dog to help protect their sight. Vitamins C, vitamin E, beta carotene and zinc are excellent sources of nutrients to help your dog's eyes.
Lutein, an antioxidant, is the carotenoid family and is highly concentrated in the macula, a small area of the retina responsible for central vision and high acuity visual. Your dogs eyes will benefit from the strong antioxidants such as vitamins and minerals can provide. The eyes of your dog are better at seeing that you are periphery, but their near vision is not as strong as yours.
The placement of dogs in the eye's vision to better the angles wide, but limited vision to the perception of depth and near vision. This is caused by a minimal overlap of the two eyes.
Dog's eyes are also best suited to do in the dark and even near darkness because they have an abundance of sensitive cells (called rods) in their retina that help detect motion. However, dogs can not see a full spectrum of colors.
The belief that they are not completely colorblind true, they can not see all the colors.
The dogs are the eyes perhaps their most attractive feature and expression. But they are also complex organs that are very susceptible to injury and disease.
You should be constantly on guard for a number of warning signs these delicate organs show if something is wrong.
Some of the signs in your dog's eyes can include discharge, redness or cloudiness, and strabismus, which are the most frequent signs of eye disease or injury. If your dog suddenly starts bumping against objects, it could be an early sign of vision loss.
Your dog is not an effective or safe way to keep their own eyes. They will often try to clean the eyes with their paws (which have claws), or rub against something to try to clean them. Both can be dangerous and cause injury to your dog's eyes. Healthy eyes in dogs should be moist and totally free of any swelling, redness, or other type of mucus. Your dog's eyes are too precious their healthy not to take note. If something seems wrong, you should immediately contact your veterinarian.
The aging process can cause clouding your eyes in dogs, but to be on the safe side, you should always have your vet check just to ensure that the darkening is caused by cataracts.
There are a myriad of diseases that can affect your dog's eyes as disease of the eyelid, disease of the lens and cornea of the eye, and glaucoma. Diseases of the eyelid that can affect your dog's eyes are Eye Cherry, conjunctivitis, entropion, and Eye Cherry.
Eye Cherry is the place beyond the third eyelid (essentially a third eyelid) lacrimal gland causing the external appearance of a bright red swelling on the corner (usually on the inside corner), hence the term "Cherry Eye".
Although surgery can correct this by repositioning, deletion of the third eyelid tear can cause a decrease in capacity production, which could hurt can not even for the eyes. Entropion, conversely, causes the eyelid to roll inward, is scratch of the cornea.
The entropion is more common in dogs which, by heredity to have wrinkled faces.
By rolling the eyelid outward and more concern to scratch, it can also cause the creation of pockets which in turn will collecting tears, and this will affect your dog can not deny the necessary lubrication is valuable for their sight. This disease can also be corrected by surgery. However, the most common disease of the eyelids (and the problem of the eyes) is conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the membranes lining your pets eyes and the whites of your eyes of animals.
Red eyes, constant strabismus, and even a slight flow are warning signs. Irritants can cause this inflammation are second-hand smoke, dust, especially if you live in very dry climates, scratches, and finally the infection. There are several types very good eye ointments and drops that can help conjunctivitis.
Diseases of the cornea in the eyes of your dog caused by scratches or abrasions are very common, especially in breeds that have large eyes and rounded. Foreign bodies can and often stick to the eyes of dogs, but the most common cause of corneal damage will be the dog itself is something they have done.
In trying to clean their own eyes, your dog can actually scratch the cornea, and continue to cause more damage by continuing this process due to the discomfort.
Disease of the lens of the eyes of your dog will most likely be caused by cataracts. Cataracts are most often inherited by certain races, but could also be caused by diabetes in your dog.
The breeds that are more prone to cataracts are inherited Labradors, Schnauzers, the Huskies, and some small breeds such as poodles and cocker spaniels.
Although cataracts are most often due to aging in breeds that are more likely, they can strike at any age. The warning signs of a cataract, like diseases of the eyelids, is a disorder in eyes. Glaucoma can be the greatest threat to the eyes of your dog as it can cause partial or total blindness of your pet. Glaucoma is a consequence of increased eye pressure by the fluid buildup in the eye. It is also an inherited eye disease affecting the same races as cataracts. What to watch with this eye disease are a sudden sensitivity to light, swelling of the eyes, pain in your dog if you touch the area around the eyes, redness or excessive tearing, and cloud cover. There is currently no known cure for this disease.
Prevent eye disease your pet is a lot out just common sense. Keep the hair from their eyes to prevent scratches, and trimming their hair can go along tract in the prevention, especially in breeds such as Maltese, Lhasa Apso and Pekingese as skin fold near the eyes. Constant cleaning of your eye dog eye wipes or sterile eye out all debris, while the mucus, and any foreign help prevent infection. Bacteria can be formed easily on the mucus.
Applying a protective ointment on the eyelid edge before any processing or even swimming will help to protect your eyes from dogs, even the so-called "no tears" shampoo can cause irritation if applied too much shampoo costs and it is not flushed early.
